Food news from Apley

2 May 2013, Fresh pulled rhubarb from Norton £4.85 per kgTilley Green Coffee Company logoLove at First Bake imageCabbages are this week’s promotion. Apley Farm Shop currently has 4 types – white, red, Savoy, Hispi, & Spring. Our special offer is a free hispi cabbage with every 1kg of potatoes. I’ve just had a delicious cabbage & potato soup for lunch today with Pimhill Oatcakes. Supper included steamed purple sprouting broccoli from Apley Walled Garden & some of the last carrots to nibble on the way to swimming lessons.

Rhubarb‘s on promotion next week – from our local supplier at the moment, but soon from Apley Walled Garden hopefully.

Love at First Bake are coming to offer tasters in Apley Farm Shop on Saturday (29 March). Their gluten free products are selling really well – Great when everyone else is tucking into a delicious loaf of wheat flour bread & I’m left with a Ryvita.

For many, switching their tea or coffee drinking habits is quite a tall order at home. So take it from us that switching our coffee supplier in The Creamery Café Restaurant, Farm Shop & Pigg’s Playbarn at Apley Farm Shop was not a rushed decision. The Tilley Green Coffee Company will be our new supplier from April. Based in Whitchurch, Shropshire, they also supply hot chocolate (always great to have around, for non-caffeine drinkers as an alternative to herbal teas). Tilley is a lovely rural part of Shropshire, not a girl’s name. Russian mulit coloured radishes

They’ll be creating 3 blends specifically for Apley & offering tasters in the Farm Shop on Saturday 12 April. We’re glad to be supporting a local blender who’s in return providing us with excellent coffee, responsibly sourced, for our Apley customers.

We’re also trying to source some first cut asparagus – my favourite, raw or lightly steamed.

A keen local gardener emailed me recently to say he’d found not only these fabulous Russian multi-coloured radishes, but also 4 special types of peppers – White Hungarian Wax pepper, Red Hungarian Wax pepper (both sweet & excellent for cooking & preserving), Thai Bird Chilli peppers & multi-coloured Patio Sizzler peppers. I’ll look forward to tasting those !
