Apley food news – July

2014-06-27, AFS handmade pate 2Shrewsbury Food Festival logoShrewsbury Food Festival imageGavin spent much of Saturday 28 June at the Shrewsbury Food Festival. Daniel Kawczynski Conservative MP for Shrewsbury tasted Apley’s handmade Scotch eggs & afterwards kindly tweeted “they are the best Scotch eggs I have ever tasted.” As well as the traditional recipe, we also make black pudding Scotch Eggs & vegetarian Scotch Eggs with cheese & mustard.

Meantime, last week, I enjoyed Apley’s delicious handmade pate for lunch, also available from the delicatessen counter at Apley Farm Shop, photographed here with Apley Walled Garden lettuce.

This week’s crop report from the Walled Garden shows the [baby] Zermatt leeks are ready as are the Bison cabbages, Femspot (ridged variety) cucumbers, Defender courgettes, red, white & yellow carrots, Aquadulce broad beans, peas in the pods & scented sweet peas for the table. At home, we’ve also been enjoying raspberries & early gooseberries.

2014-06-30, Penny Thomas Garden Tour groupNow is a great time of year to book a tour of the gardens – just book online or call / text Phil Allen on 07746 01 30 50. Phil has just shown another group round the gardens this morning (Open Tour) & here’s a photo of yesterday’s group.

I send an internal staff briefing every week, updating staff on what’s going on. Here are a few details from this week: Special of the week is Maple Chicken with butternut squash & pepper salad, Cheese of the week is The Shropshire Smokery Old Salopian mature cheddar & Cake of the week is Granola bars.

Pickling & cheeses is the theme of the Apley Cookery Club this weekend, 10-11.30am in the Conference Room. It’s free, no booking is required & all are welcome. Do bring along written, typed & or cooked cheese / pickling recipes, to share with other members. There will be the chance to taste many of the cheeses we sell on our delicatessen counter & learn more about each one from our hostess, Rae Parnham.
