2017-01-07-apley-estate-staff-partyYou may have noticed a silence – we have been without consistent wifi since before Christmas. It’s been half a megabyte at best, dipping in an out. It’s vital to me at all times, but most of all when our children are home for the holidays. Home wifi enables me to look after the children & work at the same time. Our MP is campaigning to improve wifi in rural areas, so that countryside residents are not disadvantaged. At last today we were able to celebrate having home wifi again ! Obviously we’re quitting BT & have signed up to a microwave-based (from a mast) wifi service (SWS, Airband & Unitron all operate in our area).

Then this evening, we’ve just been to the Apley Estate annual staff party in the stunning tithe barn (shown here) at the Hundred House in Norton. It’s owned by the Apley Estate but has been beautifully run by the Phillips family for over 30 years.

It’s the chance for Gavin & I to say a huge thank you to our amazing staff. Key notes from my speed-speech below should have mentioned the massive importance of community, which is what everyone round the world seeks & what Apley offers in spades (excuse the pun!):

“This party is to say a huge thank you to all our staff who run the different parts of the Apley Estate. We couldn’t run it without you. It’s very special to be part of a traditional, quintessentially English, family run country estate. You all make very special individual contributions, working incredibly hard, showing such commitment & making a great team. Many of you often work very long hours – starting very early & or finishing very late. It’s by no means straight forward running an estate dating back to the 16th century in the 21st century, but using the latest technology to our full advantage, we can overcome some of the challenges facing us. Most of our marketing now digital, online & via social media. We’ve got some great projects lined up for 2017, some of which will come off, some may not. They include working closer with TV companies & launching a new Apley product. Now we have national delivery via our online website, our horizons are broader than ever. You are our Apley ambassadors – you each make a contribution to our final end products & services. We need you all to be part of the process. I don’t want to single out anyone, but must welcome John Wesley as farm shop general manager & welcome back Phil Allen as Head Gardener. Thank you all for taking the time to come this evening. I hope you really enjoy yourselves. Thank you to the BBC’s Paul Shuttleworth for being our DJ & the Hundred House for what I’m sure will be a delicious meal. Happy New Year !”

    We switched to SWS in July, and have had no problems (other than an admin one which meant I didn’t get an invoice for almost 4 months!). Previously we were with BT and were lucky if we got 0.1 mps. Now we get 10.0 to 12.0, and can enjoy iPlayer/Netflix etc etc. And none of the ‘cannot connect to the internet’ nonsense.

    So look forward to unfettered blogs from you, and also to your visit to Ludlow U3A Farms & Food Group in April followed by our visit to Apley Estate in May.
