Two nights ago they attended The Guild of Fine Foods Golden Fork Awards ceremony in London where our Smoked Salmon WON the prestigious Golden Fork Award 2018 for the Midlands (they won it last year too – wow!)

Here is a little film of the moment found out:

It’s for sale in Apley Farm Shop – £6.49 for 100g

They also smoke our Apley Smoked Pheasant which has also just won an award (hoorah) – more on that next…

Here is their full press release about it:

Macneil’s Smokehouse celebrate Great Taste Award Success and the top industry award win ….again in 2018.

Celebrating the very best in food and drink, Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, has reached its grand finale for 2018. The Great Taste Golden Fork for the best food or drink from the Midlands was presented to Macneil’s Smokehouse from Droitwich, Worcestershire for its Macneil’s Beech Wood Smoked Salmon. Cured and then smoked in a vintage Norwegian smoker, this salmon “melts in the mouth but has a residual bite”. “Its gorgeous texture dances on the tongue in tango with the perfect smoke”, resulting in a very moreish mouthful. Sliced Scandinavian style, the Beech Wood Smoked Salmon “exudes finesse with an even cure, clean saline notes and a buttery texture”.

Macneil’s Smoked Salmon was awarded 3 stars when initially judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers. It then went on to be nominated, and then win the Golden Fork for the Midlands. Golden Fork Awards are given only to the top handful of products across the country each year selected from the 3* winners.

“As one of only 3 companies to achieve 3 stars this year in the Worcestershire area we couldn’t have been prouder of our stars when we found out, but to be then nominated for a Golden Fork was incredible and to win feels like such a huge achievement” says Tony Macneil, owner and head smoker at the Rushock based smokehouse.

After the initial testing with no regard for branding and packaging the judges savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of 1 star for “simply delicious” 2 stars for “outstanding” and 3 stars for “exquisite, wow, taste that!” All 3 star products are recalled to a second tasting day where they tasted and re-judged and then the judges agree on the Golden Fork nominees. The awards were presented at an annual celebration dinner at London’s Park Lane Intercontinental Hotel.  Tony and his wife Bee are no strangers to the event as last year they were nominated for another of their products the smoked mackerel and went on to win the coveted golden fork trophy for the Midlands area 2017.

“That we’ve been nominated a second year in a row really reflects the hard work that we put in to our products and the dedication we have to consistently producing the finest smoked products we can, but to win is incredible and for the second year in a row. We are so pleased to have our products recognised by our peers and the food industry, and we are thrilled to be representing Worcestershire producers in 2018”

There were 12,634 entries into Great Taste this year and of those products, 192 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,207 received a 2-star and 3,254 were awarded a 1-star accolade. The panel of judges this year included; MasterChef 2018 champion, Kenny Tutt, chef and food writer, Elly Curshen, eco chef and food writer, Tom Hunt, author and chef, Zoe Adjonyoh, baker Tom Herbert, author and blogger, Izy Hossack, and baker and recipe writer, Martha Collison, as well as food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges and Sourced Market.

Macneil’s Smokehouse also won great taste stars for their Smoked Trout, Smoked Chicken, Herefordshire Cider and Apple Cured Salmon, Hot Kiln Roasted Smoked Salmon and Smoked Mackerel.

Macneil’s sell their products to independent retailers, food shops, farm shops, village shops, food halls across the country and online. They also feature on many menus selling to restaurants, hotels, cafes and pubs. For a full list of retailers and restaurants or to order online you can visit their website
